GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Just before 8 a.m. on Wednesday, a tractor-trailer and five passenger vehicles crashed on the New York State Thruway. State police confirmed that two died as a result.

Eastbound lanes on Interstate 90 were closed for hours in Guilderland while police reconstructed the crash. The multi-vehicle fatal crash took place around mile marker 151.5, between exits 24 and 25 for Albany and Schenectady.

Police said a 53-year-old Boston man was driving an Amazon Prime tractor trailer when traffic slowed down due to congestion. The driver wasn’t able to slow down and subsequently hit five other vehicles.

Brian Harper, 33, of Rotterdam, died at the scene. The driver of the fifth vehicle that was struck was also pronounced dead at the scene after their vehicle and the tractor trailer caught on fire. Their identity is not being released until next of kin has been notified.

Other injuries include:

  • A 35-year-old Amsterdam woman with non-life threatening injuries
  • A 34-year-old Schenectady woman with non-life threatening injuries
  • A 50-year-old Virginia Beach, Va., man with serious injuries and listed in critical condition
  • A 33-year-old Grenville, N.Y., man with non-life threatening injuries

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured. He was evaluated by a drug recognition expert, and impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses are asked to contact State Police Investigator Matthew Spickler, SP Latham, at 518-724-7565 with any information.
