The Empire were given a surprise after practice on Tuesday, and it wasn’t the fun kind.
The team was put through an intense workout led by Brittany Burnham of HIIT It With Britt, a high intensity interval training session.
The players called the workout a love hate relationship, but it was especially hard on offensive lineman Hayworth Hicks.
“You know, I’m more of an old fashioned guy. You know, we can just go ahead and hit some common sprints after practice and call it what it is, you know.”
Just by watching their faces you could see the players struggling through the workout, and for Burnham, that’s one of the best parts,
“My heart is smiling just because I do these workouts and I struggle, but to see pro athletes doing these workouts and struggling, it’s just it’s kind of, you know.”
It’s not all about putting them through a tough workout, a female training a professional football team is something you don’t see everyday.
“I love that the players don’t see Britt for being a female; they see Britt for being an awesome strength and conditioning coach and what she brings to the table,” Head Coach Rob Keefe said. “She’s super knowledgeable about what she does.”
That fact isn’t lost on Burnham.
“It means a lot, especially because my name is in my business name so it’s been a struggle for the past couple years of not getting the respect of a female gym owner. To be doing this means a lot to me because it’s kind of just proving the whole stereotype, you know, wrong.”
