Police identify sword-wielding New Yorker shot on Christmas Eve

DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. (WUTR) — A man was shot and killed by a New York state trooper responding to a reported domestic incident on Friday afternoon. The call for a stabbing in Dolgeville came to state police between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Responding to the call, a trooper shot the suspect—identified as 24-year-old Carson Dobson—who died at the scene. Police investigators said they determined that Dobson, armed with a knife and sword, had broken into his mother’s home on Mers Way and stabbed her multiple times. She was treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said they found Dobson, still armed, not far from the scene of the home invasion. Police say he refused orders to drop his weapons, was tased, and still did not comply. That’s when the trooper fired.

This was the second officer-involved fatal shooting in Central New York last week. On Wednesday, December 22, a man was shot and killed by a state trooper responding to a domestic violence call in Unadilla. Under state law, the investigation of any police officer-involved shooting is handled by the state’s Attorney General’s Office.
