LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — Liberty University could become the first college to have an NRA and NCAA certified outdoor shooting range on campus.

The university is looking into plans to build a shooting range on its land in Campbell County, Virginia. An agent from the school requested a special use permit at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The outdoor space would include a pistol range, a rifle range, an instructional area and a three-gun competition range. There would also be future plans for an indoor firing range.

Liberty’s gun range would be open to the public, but it would be geared towards its students.

“We noticed a real surge in interest from the student body to take advantage of the free firearms safety course that the university offers,” said Liberty University’s planning coordinator Brad Butler.

The Campbell County Board of Supervisors will decide whether to grant Liberty University the special use permit on Jan. 3.
