Town of Petersburgh testing for PFOA after Hoosick Falls water issue

PETERSBURGH, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The town of Petersburgh has begun testing its water after nearby Hoosick Falls tested positive for the dangerous chemical PFOA.

Petersburgh Town Supervisor Peter Schaaphok said testing is already underway. After learning of the water contamination in the village of Hoosick Falls, he made a call to Taconic Plastics.

Michelle Waldron lives near Taconic, and she said she hasn't drank the well water for years.

Waldron said Taconic Plastics has provided her with bottled water for nearly a decade. She rents a home from the company.

"They just said there's a lot of calcium and iron in our water," she said.

But now Waldron is concerned. On Saturday, the New York State Department of Health took water samples from her home. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed the agency and health department are testing for PFOA.

"It's very scary, but I try not to get over dramatic," Waldron said. "I just, you know, hope for the best, I suppose."

Schaaphok said samples have also been taken to test the municipal water system.

"It's our duty as public officials to make sure that there is no danger, and the next step will be if there is [contamination], how are we going to deal with it?" he said.

The DEC said Taconic's legal representatives contacted the agency and informed it that the plant has previously been the site of PFOA contamination. The company makes Teflon-coated products.

"I would like to think that Taconic wouldn't put my family in jeopardy, because if so, there's going to be a problem," Waldron said. "Trust me."

Town officials will hold a board meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Schaaphok said he wants approval from town board members to pay to have the town test water on its own near Taconic Plastics.

"To make the residents in our town absolutely sure that they don't have to worry about anything," he said. "I think it'd be a worthwhile expenditure."

Taconic Plastics did not have a comment Monday on the issue.
