BENNINGTON, Vt. (NEWS10) – A world famous doll maker is opening his workshop to the public for the very first time.
For 40 years, R. John Wright and his wife, Susan, have been making dolls. There is something for everyone.
“Disney characters, Curious George, Teddy Roosevelt, Snow White,” he said.
R. John Wright Dolls are a collectors dream. Each doll is made with specific details and care.
“So it begins with looking at source material,” Wright said.
Each doll is comprised with time, detail and love.
“What we were able to do is figure out a way to have art day all through our lives every day,” Wright said.
But not many people know about the hidden gem in Bennington.
“A lot of even the local people, they drive past the sign, but they aren’t really sure what’s going on in there,” Wright said.
But now, for the first time ever, the step-by-step behind-the-scenes process is being opened to the general public.
“I think it’s important to get out there,” Susan said. “It’s a big world, and we want everybody to see what we’re doing because that’s how collectors are made. They don’t know anything. They see something. They fall in love.”
Michael Maskery said he fell in love with the special pieces. He said he is one of John and Susan’s biggest fans.
“They’re just so great, and every piece is special,” he said. “Every piece is amazing, and it’s always that next piece that you can’t wait for. And then when you get them all together, and you get that group, they’re phenomenal.”
The open house began on Friday and will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The event is free of charge, and refreshments will be served.
