NEW YORK (NEWS10) – NYS Police in Wilton are investigating a theft by fraud that involves rare coin collectors.

Two suspects, Michael Adcock of Pacific City, Oregon, and Donald “Scott” Rainey of Beaumont, Texas, made contact with a couple in Corinth, NY about evaluating a coin collection.

Adcock and Rainey were operating under the business names “Vintage World Coin” and Pacific Coin Company.

The fraud involved Adcock and Rainey taking a coin collection owned by the Corinth couple for evaluation without providing a receipt and later returning convincing the couple to provide a cashier’s check to purchase more coins they claimed would make the collection worth more.

The investigation into this incident revealed the suspects sold some of the couple’s coins in New Jersey.

Adcock was taken into custody in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, March 24 pursuant to a warrant obtained by NYSP. Two State Police Investigators are traveling to D.C. on Tuesday, March 29 to return Adcock to Saratoga County to face charges.

Rainey, who is wanted in Colorado for a similar scam, is now wanted in NY and is believed to making his way back to Texas.

State Police believe there may be additional victims in the Capital Region, and request anyone who believes they may have information to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Unit in Wilton at 518-583-7010.
