State of emergency lifted in Village of Coxsackie

Greene County

COXSACKIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Village of Coxsackie has declared a state of emergency and is asking residents to stay home after strong storms brought down many power lines and trees, blocking roadways.

Severe thunderstorms and a potential tornado tore through the village.

Several 200-year-old trees were completely uprooted from the ground. Mayor Mark Evans says approximately 100 trees are down with electrical wires and thousands without power.

Many residents were left with severe damage to their homes, yards and cars.

“Everything went dark, the shutters started rattling and it got really dark. Then I just heard a huge crash,” said Patrick Lowery.

Lowery looked out his window to see his backyard completely covered with broken trees and branches. He says a 200-year-old Norwegian maple tree left it’s mark and shattered his truck’s windshield.

“The tree was all cabled up and secured but the winds were just too strong. It crashed into my car, and my truck is now a pancake. It broke some windows in the garage, but I was really lucky it didn’t land on my house,” said he.

Resident Cindy Turk says it looked like something out of a movie.

“It was so long and you could hear all the branches breaking. It collided with my daughters’ truck over there and broke her windshield,” said Turk.

Mayor Evans is asking residents to remain indoors as they start to clean up and access the damages.

“We really need them to stay in and stay off the roads so that our fire department could respond to calls,” said he.

As Lowery picks up the pieces, he says he is lucky to still have his home standing.

“I’m just fortunate it’s a house from 1831 and I’m just happy it wasn’t destroyed,” said he.

If anyone is in of emergency power or on oxygen, Mayor Evans says they have an emergency shelter at the D.M. Hamilton Fire Department.

The state of emergency went into effect Wednesday, July 7 at 5 p.m.
