A local couple is transforming furniture, rooms and homes one beautiful piece at a time.
John and Sarah Trop aren’t messing around. They’re experts at repurposing furniture, designing custom pieces, and more. So when the couple went on HGTV’s Flea Market Flip, they were ready.
The Trops thriving business, FunCycled in Troy, began in their basement in 2012.
“When my kids were napping, I would paint the day away and at night when they were sleeping, so I could stay home when they were little.”
Old dressers, tables or pianos became works of art. Soon Sarah’s online business was overwhelming her.
“We really couldn’t keep up with the demand. Someone had to join me and he said, ‘Why not be me.’”
“[It was scary] for her yes; not for me.”
That’s because Sarah is the Steady Eddie of the pair. John is all about taking a risk, and so jump they did.
“I kept going, we are never getting a store front; we are never getting employees. Every step of the way he’s saying, it’s time.”
John’s extensive woodworking skills helped him bring Sarah’s visions to life. But not without some negotiating at times.
“We have different visions but we meet in the middle.”
In fact, Sarah said it’s their husband and wife partnership that makes the business so successful because they are not afraid to call each other out.
“It’s humbling, and people say who wants that, but it’s good to have someone say check yourself.”
At their River Street store, FunCycled is always filled with fun, painted furniture and architectural pieces. And running in the corner is a video of the couple’s appearance on the Rachel Ray Show and Flea Market Flip.
