Cashing in on viral videos

Special Reports

Shoot a great video you want the world to see? It’s easy with social media, but now you can also get paid for it with big money.

Many people just happen to shoot great video, and marketing your viral video is big business. Jukin Media is a leader in the genre with its signature brand, FailArmy, full of epic fails.

Jukin said the most important thing to consider when deciding who markets your video is will they protect your ownership rights?

“Unfortunately, there’s a lot of players who are still stealing videos and putting them up on websites and monetizing them for themselves,” Jon Skogmo, of Jukin Media, said. “For us, we build an entire rights management team to help us protect the rights around your video.”

The top five buyers are:

  1. Jukin Media
  2. Storyful
  3. Viral Hog
  4. Go Pro
  5.  Video Elephant

Some videos can earn tens of thousands of dollars, but the average is $200 to $300.

The upside of marketing agencies is that you can make a lot of money from a popular video. But the downside is that they could stop your video from going into a bigger viral orbit because sites would have to pay to post.

Agencies also say it’s best to first share your videos with TV stations and on social media because that’s how they find it. Then, they’ll reach out and help get your video in your control and making money for you.
