SOUTH CAIRO, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Marie Kondo made downsizing all the rage, and “Tiny House Living” is popular on HGTV. But will people go for the less is more approach when it comes to their vacations? A new Catskills resort is finding the answer is a resounding yes!

“Dirty Dancing” showed us the heyday of the grand resorts of the Catskills in the 1950s. Back then, bungalow colonies also offered an escape from the city in the summer but on a smaller scale. Now this new resort shrinks the old bungalow concept down to tiny house size.

Property Manager Marjorie Juszczak says they provide all the services that you would have in a regular house. She’s managed her dad’s rental properties for years before putting her personal stamp on A Tiny House Resort in South Cairo.

“We picked the units and designed them based on what we experienced and what we liked in traveling the country,” she said. “We spent three years traveling in an RV and that brought us here.”

You know what else brought them here? The sale of something big.

Marjorie’s dad, Bob Malkin, started Think Big in New York City where they sold oversized items like six foot pencils and five foot crayola crayons. When he sold the Think Big property in Manhattan, Bob wondered where to reinvest. Growing up in Brooklyn, he had fond memories of his family sharing a bungalow in the Catskills.

“That’s what we would do every summer, and I had the time of my life,” recalled Bob.

But not just any property would do. He needed to see and hear water. When he found the property with a stream and waterfall, Bob said, “I fell in love again with the Catskills.”

Now, he acts as a tour guide, sharing his love of art, antiques and food with visitors like Linda Patton up from the city to celebrate a birthday.

“It’s so beautiful, it’s so calming,” Linda exclaimed. “I thought, you know, you could go camping, but this has all the perks. I feel like as if I had a tent, I’m completely surrounded by nature, every side. It’s fantastic, waterfalls, but all these comforts. It’s the best escape I’ve ever been on, the best holiday I’ve ever had.”

The units each have their own name and range in size from a very cozy 100 to 400 square feet, all with kitchens, full bathrooms, WiFi and cable. The resort is dog friendly, guests can cook fresh eggs every morning from the chickens on the property, and Marjorie even offers nightly goat walks. Pygmy goats, of course, in keeping with the tiny house theme.

Guests share their fondness for their stays in reviews.

“People say I’ve made so many memories here I’ll never forget it,” Marjorie shared.

They opened with just four units in September 2017 intending to close January through March. But A Tiny House Resort has been so popular they went right to year-round business and added five more units. They plan another six along the water’s edge in the fall.

After that? The sky’s the limit for this tiny retreat. Bob said the dream is to open this kind of resort all over the country.

“Think big!”
