MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York State Police have confirmed that a woman has died after a motorcycle crash on the Northway Wednesday morning. The woman has been identified as Laura Covarrubias, 38, of Glenmont.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on I-87 northbound between exits 11 and 12. Police said Covarrubias was driving a 2021 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound in the middle lane when she moved to the left lane and struck another motorcycle driven by a Schenectady man.

Police said Covarrubias then lost control and left the roadway, striking a guiderail. Both motorcyclists had been traveling together at the time of the crash.

Covarrubias was transported to Saratoga Hospital with critical injuries. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The man driving the other motorcycle was uninjured.

The left lanes in both directions were closed for a period of time this morning. All lanes are now open.
