ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Restaurant owners from around New York state are hoping lawmakers vote this week to allow serving alcohol before noon on Sundays.

The so-called “brunch bill” is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s effort to modernize state alcohol laws that in many cases date back to Prohibition.

Whether the bill passes before lawmakers adjourn this week depends on whether they agree on the details. One version of the proposal would allow the sale of alcohol as as early as 8 a.m. Another would set a 10 a.m. start-time for most establishments.

Supporters gathered to speak in favor of the change Monday at an Albany pub.

They say it will give businesses the flexibility to serve brunch-goers as well as patrons watching European soccer games or other sporting events.
