CRARYVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Parents say when their kids went back to school here last week, they had some unexpected new classmates, rats!
Some say the rats aren’t new to the district at all.
Caught on camera was a rat roaming the halls of Taconic Hills Central Schools.
“If she didn’t move out of the way it was going to cross right on over her foot.”
Parents say a student snapped this shot of the rodent running in the school gym last Thursday.
“Parents need to be notified and this needs to be taken care of this is a very disgusting issue.”
Georgette Lindig has two children at Taconic Hills. When another parent told her about the problem, she shared the news on Facebook and contacted the school, but she says she got nowhere until parents started talking about the problem on social media.
“I guess this was going on last year as well when it was put onto my Facebook after I put it out there.”
Some parents concerned that rodents may have been going to class with their kids since last year.
“There’s disease and children being exposed to all this,” Parent Dave Persons said.
Persons is frustrated he didn’t find out about the rats from the district. He too got the news somewhere else.
NEWS10 ABC’s Noel McLaren reached out to the district who declined to go on camera but told us there was only one rat on campus and sent us this statement:
“We are working with our Integrated Pest Management Company to remediate and we have made the Department of Health aware of the problem. Mice and rats are common problems in and around school buildings and we are working diligently to resolve the issue.”
The Columbia County Health Department says they are looking into the problem.
