LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – New York State Police say the case against Rachael Mattice has been closed following her arrest on Friday.

Police say Mattice, 24, voluntarily surrendered to State Police on Friday in Mayfield. She is being charged with falsely reporting an incident.

Police say Rachael claimed she was knocked out as was getting ready to work during the early morning hours of June 23 at the family’s campsite in Wells. She claimed she was locked in a small shed and repeatedly assaulted.

The 24-year-old went missing from her campsite in Wells in June, sparking a massive search from law enforcement and the community. Her family held vigils hoping to spread the word and bring their family member back home.

Police say they followed up on around 400 leads in the case. The price tag for the search and investigation is currently in the six-figures.

Police say Rachael told them her abductor blindfolded her and drove her back to within two blocks of her family’s residence in Johnstown.

That’s when Rachael’s mother contacted police to let them know she was back alive on July 6.

On July 12, police released a sketch of a man that was being sought in Mattice’s disappearance. The man was described as Caucasian, in his middle to late 50s, approximately 6′ tall, having brown eyes, gray hair, full beard, and weighing 200 to 250 pounds. Police say the description of the man was made up.

On July 18, police say a witness came forward and told them that he gave Rachael a ride to a camp in Canada Lake, N.Y., which belonged to the boyfriend of Rachael’s aunt. Police say Rachael has frequented the camp and knows the area well.

Two other hikers, according to police, were able to verify the driver’s account.

Police say additional electronic evidence and medical findings were not consistent with Rachael’s accounts.

“Nothing Mattice said happened. It’s all made up,” William Keeler, Troop G Commander, said.

During a press conference held by New York State Police and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning, police stated they are still unsure what she was doing during her disappearance and are still investigating.

Police are also investigating prescription drug theft allegations against Rachael involving her job as a home health aide at the Hamilton County Public Nursing Service.

Hamilton County Sheriff Karl Abrams says that Mattice did know police were planning to interview her about those allegations before her disappearance, but it remains unclear if the investigation has anything to do with her disappearance.

Police would not provide any other details of that investigation during the press conference.

Police say Rachael is sticking with her story, despite having turned herself in to police on Friday.

State Police say they are confident they have enough evidence to prove Rachael’s story false.

“Exactly what she was doing, exactly where she was. There’s still some blanks in there, and we’re going to continue investigating them,” said NY State Police Investigator Jefferey Ullman on Friday.

Mattice has not yet been charged with theft, but the investigation is still pending.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says they plan to meet with the County District Attorney some time next week

Mattice was processed and released on a ticket to appear in Mayfield Court on August 9.
