Police search for answers in Germania Avenue shooting

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Schenectady man is dead and police are looking for answers after a shooting in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood.

Firefighters washed the sidewalk Thursday afternoon where 30-year-old Andre Lee was shot and killed. The crime scene tape was removed, but bullet holes remain in an abandoned building on Germania Avenue.

“Upon arriving on scene, officers located one male victim who had been shot multiple times,” Schenectady Police Sgt. Matthew Dearing said.

Down the street, Sally Tillman heard the shots ring out.

“Five of ’em,” she said. “I was sitting here about 10 o’clock. I told him, ‘Listen. You’ll hear sirens.’ The next things I see the street was just loaded.”

The victim was taken to Ellis Hospital. He died two hours later.

It’s the second homicide to take place on Germania Avenue in a five-week span. The violence has taken a toll on Tillman and her daughter.

“I don’t like to walk alone at all, so I usually try to bring someone with me,” Kala Tillman said. “It bothers me because you never know.”

While investigators went door-to-door to speak with neighbors, kids were playing nearby.

“Well, it scares ya because there’s a lot of kids out here,” Tillman said. “You got a daycare right here.”

Sgt. Dearing said police do not have a suspect.

“Obviously, we’re hoping that whoever has surveillance cameras, whoever we talked to in the area, will be able to provide a little bit more information,” he said.

As the investigation continues, families tried to go about their day knowing a killer is on the loose.

“I just hope he gets caught and nothing else happens to anyone cause too often shootings happen,” Kala said. “There’s always shootings on the corners all around this area.”

There are still a lot of unanswered questions such as why Lee was on Germania Avenue or what he was doing there.
