SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Schenectady Police Department arrested a man accused of burglary and sexual assault on an elderly female.
Around 9:10 p.m. Saturday, police said 21-year-old David Sinkler forced his way into an apartment and sexually assaulted an elderly female resident.
“He seemed to be knocking at the door, and then forced his way in at that point in time,” Schenectady Police Sgt. Matthew Dearing said.
The municipal housing apartments are for the elderly and disabled. Normally, a key is needed to get in, but a resident claimed the door is broken. And after the burglary and assault, some people living there don’t feel safe.
“This door has not been fixed,” Sandy Giello said. “Is that door locked? Is that door locked?
“We’re supposed to be secure,” she continued. “Excuse me for being upset, but that’s not secure.”
Sgt. Dearing wasn’t sure if the door Giello spoke about was the same door Sinkler used to enter the building. But Giello said she reported the door broken two weeks ago.
NEWS10 ABC was not able to reach the property manager on Monday.
Other neighbors said they are now on guard, and Giello said they should be.
“[I feel] pretty scared to tell you the truth,” she said.
Sgt. Dearing offered advice to stay safe.
“If you’re not expecting anyone, and you don’t feel comfortable, don’t answer the door,” he said.
Giello won’t be taking any chances.
“I just had a new hip put in,” she said. “If I had to run, I couldn’t run.”
Sinkler was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with one count of Burglary in the First Degree, a felony, and one count of Criminal Sexual Act in the First Degree, a felony.
The Schenectady man was arraigned Monday morning and remanded without bail to the Schenectady County Jail.
The victim’s identity will not be released. Police said she did not know Sinkler.
