CAIRO, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Cairo Police Department arrested a 17-year-old they say vandalized several Hometown Heroes banners on Main Street.

Police say the banners were intentionally cut.

“These banners mean so much to the community because of the Veterans that are recognized on the banners, some who have sacrificed their lives for us,” Sergeant Busch said.

The banners honor local men and women who have served in the military going back to the French and Indian War to today’s conflict. The damaged banners will be replaced.

The teen was charged with felony criminal mischief. He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.

Police say the teen turned himself into police and took responsibility for his actions because of the intense community interest and pressure surrounding the case.
