Report: NY’s ongoing population loss mainly downstate in 2017-18

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A report released by Empire Center found that New York’s ongoing population loss was mainly downstate in 2017-18.

According to Empire Center, the 50 counties of upstate NY lost 8,719 residents, a decrease of 0.14 percent, while the downstate region (New York City, Long Island and lower Hudson Valley) lost a combined total of 39,791 people or 0.30 percent.

The following map shows the change in population for every New York county from 2010-18. Hover over each county to see the population over the course of the eight year period.

The population change is based on net migration and the births and deaths of residents.
