The New York Department of Labor announced it has begun safety inspections on all rides at amusement parks and fairs.

The department inspects the rides at least once a year. A ride cannot legally operate without a permit. Officials also inspect the rides at traveling carnivals and fairs every time they are set up in a new location.

That inspection is a three-part process:

  1. As rides are brought onto fair grounds, each individual piece is looked over for any defects.
  2. The ride is then put together and inspected again to ensure all components are assembled and secured properly.
  3. The ride’s operator starts it, and the ride is inspected as it is running to ensure everything works smoothly.

Last year, the Department of Labor inspected over 8,000 rides and found over 2,000 violations that needed to be fixed.

Everyone who uses the rides are urged to follow appropriate safety procedures.
