New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation banning conversion therapy and LGBTQ protections.
The law prohibits employers, educational institutions, landlords, creditors, and others from discriminating against individuals on the basis of gender identity. It makes offenses committed based on gender identity or expression hate crimes under New York State law.
The law also bans the practice of converting one’s sexual orientation. It expands the definition of professional misconduct for professions under the education law to include engaging in conversion therapy with a patient under the age of 18.
The governor signed the legislation in New York City on Friday.
