TAMPA, FL – OCTOBER 22: Voting booths are setup at the Yuengling center on the campus of University of South Florida as workers prepare to open the doors to early voters on October 22, 2018 in Tampa, Florida. Florida voters head to the polls to cast their early ballots in the race for the Senate […]

The New York State Senate passed a bill to allow early voting in an effort to drive up election turnout.

The proposal passed 48-13.

Most states already allow advance voting, but the idea has long been stalled in the Legislature. Now, with Democrats in control of both chambers, supporters say they expect the measure to pass.

Under the legislation, voters could cast a ballot up to 10 days before an election.

Lawmakers will also vote on a proposed constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would allow voters to register on Election Day.
