States with the highest risk of Black Friday violence

Millions of Americans are expected to head to malls and shopping centers to get the latest Black Friday deals.

According to the National Retail Federation, an estimated 164 million people plan to go shopping over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. 

Over the years, there have been reports of violence on Black Friday. Reviews.org ranked states on its risk for violence. 

The rankings were based on the following:

  • Violent crime rates per 100,000 in each state (20%)
  • Search volume for the term “Black Friday deals” by state (20%)
  • Previous reports of Black Friday deaths and injuries per 100,000 by state (60%)

Hover over each state to see its overall rank. States with darker purple have a higher risk of violence than states with a lighter color.
