In the midst of restaurateur and lifestyle guru B. Smith’s battle with Alzheimer’s, her husband is publicly dating, even giving an interview to The Washington Post about the situation on Monday.

Smith revealed her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. She has been married to her husband Dan Gasby since 1992.

Gasby says he is committed to serving as Smith’s caregiver during her battle with Alzheimer’s and the two still live together. Also living with Smith and Gasby is Gasby’s girlfriend Alex Lerner.

According to The Washington Post, Gasby, 64, first revealed his romance with Lerner, 53, on the Facebook page he shares with Smith back in December.

Gasby and Lerner first met in 2017, according to the Post. Lerner has a room in Smith and Gasby’s house and says she even helps to care for Smith.

Gasby said in the profile that his critics are racist and angry at him because Lerner is a white woman.

“I have been married to a black woman for 26 years,” he said. “I have a PhD in black love.”

B. Smith, 69, came to fame as a model and later opened several eponymous restaurants in New York and Washington, D.C, launched her own home collection and magazine and appearing on the “Today” show.

Smith’s fans are understandably confused and upset by the situation, many launching criticism at Gasby on social media.

Gasby responded on Facebook, calling out his critics, and defending both his relationships.

“love my wife but I can’t let her take away my life!” said Gasby.
