ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A woman and her boyfriend were charged following an investigation into the death of her 1-year-old boy.
On February 6, police responded to the South Allen Street home of Rebecca Patrick where they found 1-year-old Luka unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
He had just turned 1 on January 24.
On Thursday, a grand jury indicted Patrick and her boyfriend, David Bridges, in Luka’s death.
Bridges was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child. Patrick was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Both have been arraigned and pleaded not guilty. His grandmother is speechless.
“For that baby to go through what he did, he didn’t deserve it,” Kristen Pieck-Gillson said. “He was a sweet, innocent little boy.”
The Albany County District Attorney alleges Luka died of blunt force trauma and lacerated liver while he was left in Bridge’s care on February 6. The indictment states Patrick failed to seek medical care on multiple occasions.
Police said Patrick wasn’t home when Luka was reported unresponsive. According to the indictment, Luka was repeatedly abused for nearly a month by Bridges before his death.
Pieck-Gillson hopes the charges stick.
“I’ve been wanting justice since I’ve heard it,” she said. “He needs to pay for what he did to my grandson.”
In the meantime, Pieck-Gillson continues to mourn her grandson as well as a budding relationship with her daughter.
“To sit back and know that something happened – somebody was doing this to your child – I just don’t understand that,” she said.
Bridges remains in Albany County Jail. Patrick was released.
New court dates have not been scheduled at this time.
