Community effort helps locate missing Montgomery County toddler

Montgomery County

ROOT, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office posted an alert to Facebook asking for help locating a missing 2-year-old on Thursday morning. By early Thursday evening, Caleb Kauffman had been found in the woods with his puppy.

Dispatch first received the report of the Sprakers child missing just after 11 a.m. They say the Caleb went missing from his home with his 4-month-old golden retriever puppy, Layla. He had last been seen wearing black shorts and a black and red sweater.

New York State Police dogs and deputies from the Sheriff’s Department searched the property and then called in more resources to help look. Authorities conducted interviews while combing the area with helicopters, ATVs, and search parties on foot. Crews and neighbors from around the region, including members of the Amish community, showed up to assist.

Finally, at about 3:41 p.m., a volunteer found Caleb and Layla “a great distance from their home.” Emergency medical crews gave him a clean bill of health, and he returned home to his family.
