Million Dollar Beach in Lake George closed again, to reopen soon

UPDATE: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says Million Dollar Beach on Lake George will reopen for swimming on Sunday.

Tests showed the water and beach safe for swimming once again.

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – People weren’t able to go to a popular beach Saturday after the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) closed it due to high bacteria levels in the water. This isn’t the first time the beach has faced this kind of issue.

It wasn’t because of Americade, but the bacteria problems the beach had last year just won’t go away.

The state DEC closed Lake George beach, also known as Million Dollar Beach Saturday after water samples taken Tuesday showed levels of E. Coli higher than the state Department of Health guidelines.

“We are in mid-June you would think that they would be prepared for this,” said Singh of Halfmoon, N.Y.

The agency says recent rainfall could have caused the problem.

Bacteria problems on million dollar beach just won’t go away. Singh, who traveled from Halfmoon with his friends and family, wasn’t too happy.

“It’s such a shame because it’s such a beautiful day,” Singh said.

But, it’s trying to track down the actual source or sources to prevent future contamination.

It’s not a new issue for the beach — closed last summer more than once due to high bacteria levels.

The DEC determined it came from human waste last August.

The agency continues to find high levels of bacteria in this water.

“We are continuing to investigate the potential sources of the issue and working to take corrective actions,” the DEC said in a statement.

Singh feels they had months to figure this out.

“You hope the people responsible for the beach would have handled this,” Singh said.

He and his friends like Ashish Tari came to Lake George just to go to the beach, but they ended up going to neighboring Dog Beach.

The DEC has not responded regarding any potential bacteria at Dog Beach.

“We didn’t want to turn around and go back to Clifton Park and you know have the kids disappointed,” Tari said. “”People want to come here and swim and enjoy the water. They want to enjoy Lake George.”

“I hope they remedy the situation soon,” Tari said.

Since May 27th, Million Dollar Beach was only opened for swimming on Saturdays and Sundays.

It’s scheduled to open for swimming seven days a week starting June 17th.

The DEC has announced they’ll be reopening Million Dollar Beach on Sunday, June 11th.

The agency says results from water samples taken yesterday showed E. Coli levels below the state Department of Health guidelines.

It also plans to do testing on a daily basis to ensure the area is safe for swimming.
