SCHENECTADY, NY (NEWS10) – 21-year-old Jonathan Monforte aka “J-5” of Schenectady admitted in court Thursday that he fatally shot 18-year-old Kusaan Tolliver on Schenectady Street on July 27, 2015.

Monforte pled guilty to First Degree Murder and will be sentenced on April 14 to a prison term of 25 years. He admitted that he intentionally killed Tolliver by shooting him multiple times with a revolver, while acting under the influence of extreme emotional disturbance.

The shooting happened on the sidewalk outside of 532 Schenectady Street at around 9:48 p.m. while neighbors were outside on their porches.

Monforte was identified as the suspect early in the investigation but he fled Schenectady and was not apprehended until December 28, 2015. He was found in Troy with the help of the U.S. Marshall’s service, hiding with his girlfriend at the apartment of a third-party.

The motive for the shooting appears to have been retaliation for a fight occurring earlier in the same day where Monforte fought with Tolliver and others on Schenectady Street.

During the fight, just before 6 p.m., one of Tolliver’s companions, identified as Bruce Campbell aka “Animal”, allegedly threatened Monforte’s mother with a handgun. Campbell was arrested minutes later for Menacing and was in jail when Monforte shot Tolliver.

The Schenectady County Court Judge accepted Monforte’s guilty plea.
