Woman seriously injured in Greenfield Center shooting

A 33-year-old woman has been hospitalized with serious injuries after police say she was shot in the head in a Greenfield Center trailer park Saturday night.

Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic incident at 353 Grange Road, Lot 3 in the Town of Greenfield.

“I was going to work last night at about 9 o’clock in the evening and I just heard a lot of loud banging noises right in the house and I saw the things thrown out in the yard so I thought maybe there was a domestic incident going on,” said neighbor, Linda Wheeler.

Saratoga County Lt. Patrick Maswich says the victim was taken to Albany Medical Center with a serious gunshot wound to the head after an incident at the Grange Road Mobile Estates trailer park.

After their findings, it was concluded that Stephen Lerario was the suspect in the shooting and he was arrested for assault in the first degree, a felony.

Neighbors told NEWS10 they heard a heated argument outside in which objects were thrown. Then they heard a gunshot.

“I wasn’t sure if someone was breaking something or what it was,” Wheeler said. “It was just very loud and I heard yelling.”

Lerario is accused of firing a shotgun at the victim, Katie Gilbert, which struck her in the head. Gilbert and Lerario are believed to have a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship

Lt. Maswich says deputies responded to an anonymous call Saturday night.

“Upon arriving, we found the residence to be unoccupied,” said Lt. Maswich. “While at the scene investigating, we received a second call from Saratoga Hospital reporting they had a 33-year-old female in the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the head.”

Officials say the victim was then transported to Albany Medical Center for emergency surgery and is in critical condition.
