Woman hit, killed while crossing road in Latham

A 61-year-old woman has died after she was hit by a car in Latham, police said.

The accident took place around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Route 2 and Swatling Road in front of Cumberland Farms. The area was closed during an investigation Tuesday night but has since reopened.

According to police, the victim was a pedestrian. She has been identified as Janet A. Nittoli of New York. Authorities said she was in the area of a crosswalk though they are not sure if she was in it. 

She died at the scene. 

Police have not been able to locate next of kin for Nittoli. It is believed she has been in the Capital Region for a few months and may have been in homeless shelters at times. She also frequented the CDTA bus line and spent time in the area of Troy-Schenectady Road in Latham.

The driver was a 57-year-old male from Troy. He called 911 and is cooperating with police. Intoxication has been ruled out as a factor, and he is not facing any charges.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who may have seen the accident or has information about the victim is asked to call police at (518) 783-2744.
