Volunteers build special project for National Women Build Week

Friday was International Women’s Day, which just so happens to fall during Habitat for Humanity’s “National Women Build Week”.

Employees from Rivers Casino and Resort partnered with Habitat for Humanity for a special project.

The volunteers built a home for a local woman who recently had to check in to a homeless shelter after the birth of her second child.

In roughly a month from Saturday, she and her two daughters will have a home to call their own.

The house will be located on Oaklawn Avenue in Rotterdam.  The executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County said this is the first home they’ve built in that area.

“There’s two little girls who are going to grow up in their own home.  They are going to paint the bedroom any color they want to paint it, they are going to be able to plant flowers and vegetables, and it’s all theirs and it happens because of all these fabulous people make it happen.”

-Madelyn Thorne, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Schenectady County.

Habitat for Humanity first celebrated Women Build Week in 1991.
