A Troy woman was hospitalized early Thursday morning after she ran into a burning building to warn its residents. That building turned out to be empty.

Officials say the fire in the duplex on Fifth Avenue in Troy began around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. A neighbor and her friend saw the fire and ran to the building, smashing the glass on a back window and forcing their way inside to warn anyone who might be living inside.

Thankfully, that building was vacant. The neighbor has been taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. She is being observed and is expected to be alright.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
