Central Avenue was closed in both directions from Lapham Drive to Red Fox Drive due to a traffic accident that destroyed two power poles Saturday.
Colonie Police responded to the area at around 8:30 a.m. and found the 80-year-old operator of a pickup truck to be unconscious and possibly in cardiac arrest.
Witnesses say the pickup truck as travelling normally in the eastbound lane, when it left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk, striking 2 power poles and breaking them.
The truck then travelled across all lanes of traffic and came to rest on the north side curb of Central Ave.
It does not appear that this truck collided with any other vehicles during this crash.
Colonie Police are investigating the possibility that the driver suffered a medical event that caused him to leave the roadway.
Officers and paramedicson scene performed CPR on the driver and he was transported to Albany Medical Center where he currently remains in serious but stable condition.
The accident caused power outages and closed parts of Central Ave. from the time of the accident until around 5 p.m..
According to National Grid’s website, nearly 400 homes in the area lost power at one point, but has now been restored.
