A buzzing topic for New York State is the governor’s proposal to legalize recreational marijuana for adults.
Within that proposal local governments could have the power to ban retail marijuana shops. But even with a ban there are still some concerns about the impact it could make.
“Some sheriffs are for it. Some sheriffs are against it. I have some concerns mainly about what it is going to do for our K9s. I have a very large K9 division. A lot of them are trained in sniffing and searching for marijuana,” said Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.
Josh Weinstein is the founder of the organization CannaGather. He believes legalization will bring in revenue to local communities.
“There is no market bigger in the world for cannabis than New York, which is surprising.. Now we are going to see that unlicensed market move to the legal economy,” said Weinstein.
While some are torn about the subject many are just preparing for what’s to come.
“It’s inevitable that we are not going to be able to stop it. So we just want to have a plan in place to deal with it,” Sheriff Apple stated.
