Sex offender accused of trying to have sexual communication with a minor

COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The Colonie Police Department arrested a man they say tried to have sexual communication with a minor.

Police say Gary Ryan, 47, of Clifton Park, messaged undercover investigators in December and January thinking he was communicating with a 14-year-old boy.

Ryan, a Level 1 Sex Offender, is accused of having online conversations, often sexual in nature, with the undercover investigators. Police say some of the messages contained sexually explicit photos.

Police believe they have identified an actual 14-year-old that was a potential victim.

On Monday, police executed a search warrant on Ryan's residence and digital media devices were seized for further forensic examination.

He was charged with three counts of attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor.

Police say there are several known instances of Ryan having contact with underage persons locally and one unsuccessful trip out of state to meet an underage person.

According to police, Ryan is active in the area of sports memorabilia and may have used that to have illegal contact with underage persons.

Police say it's not the first time Ryan has faced charges like these. Back in 2008, he was arrested for having child porn on his computer, all while he was a local little league coach.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim or has information regarding this case is asked to contact Colonie Police at (518)-783-2744.
