Back in 2011 when Tropical Storm Irene flooded Schoharie County, the longest covered bridge in the world was washed away. The new bridge is now set to open.
At the cost of nearly $7.5 million, the new bridge was raised 15 feet above the old foundation and is still the longest single span bridge of its type in the word, at over 210 feet. It took a community effort to get the bridge rebuilt with 100% of the funds coming from a FEMA grant.
“It should be finished by the end of September ,” Richard Christman, of Greenman Pedersen, Inc., said. “We just have ground work to do now and we are waiting for some parts that are on back order.”
The largest pieces of wood, western red cedar came all the way from western Canada.
