Schenectady shooting victims recovering

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Two neighborhoods in Schenectady are still reeling after Tuesday’s shooting where two children and their mother were gunned down.

Police say the alleged shooter, the woman’s boyfriend, was also injured after turning the gun on himself.

A friend of the family says there’s word that they may have a long road to recovery but they’re expected to pull through.

The sound of gunfire rang out Tuesday afternoon on Union Street. What seemed like an army of officers hunted down the suspected gunman 47-year-old Deshawn Howard.

His girlfriend and her two children were also injured.

Friend and daycare provider Dawn Rapp feared the worst.

“I hear she’s dead.”

Twenty-four hours later there was good news. She got word that they’re going to be okay.

Rapp says she wonders how the two children, seven and 16, and their mother are doing emotionally while recovering in the hospital, knowing a man they once trusted is suspected of pulling the trigger.

“You don’t do something like that to someone you’re supposed to be in love with and especially kids. She never deserved anything like this, nor the kids.”

Schenectady Police say Howard is also in the hospital, being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face.

After the shooting officers got a tip that he was two miles away in the second story apartment at a Summit Avenue duplex.

The downstairs neighbor says she was shocked when she came home and was greeted by a heavy police presence.

“I want to know what he was doing here.”

Rapp says there was a history of domestic abuse in the home that led to an arrest in April.

“I said what happened and she said, Deshawn beat me up and I called the cops. He should go away for a long time. “

All four are still in area hospitals.

Howard was arraigned in Albany Medical Center on July 17 on three counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree. He was then turned over to Schenectady County.
