Schenectady detective arrested following off-duty altercation in Utica

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Schenectady Police say one of their detectives was arrested in Utica early Wednesday morning.

Utica Police say Detective Steven Nelson was involved in an off-duty altercation in the city.

The Schenectady Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is currently investigating the incident.

The following is a statement from Chief Eric S. Clifford in regards to the arrest:

“The Schenectady Police Department prides itself on being professional, trustworthy, and transparent.  My expectations are that all of our officers conduct themselves as consummate professionals, both on and off duty.  While I do not condone the actions of Detective Nelson, I urge the public to continue to support and trust the Schenectady Police Department and its Officers.”
