This Saturday, community members honored a local man who survived a grueling battle with cancer.

The Sarcoma Strong 5K celebrated Mike Meleco of Ballston Lake, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in 2016.  He underwent close to a year of chemotherapy and had one of his limbs amputated.  But now, he’s cancer free.

The event offers hope to others who are facing the disease.

“The effort here is to raise dollars for research and to be inspired by people who have walked this challenge.  And also to encourage them and to be there as a support network, and to strike public awareness.  But to really get those dollars in to research so that we can provide for better treatment or perhaps a cure,” said Congressman Paul Tonko.

Saturday’s event marked the fifth year of the race.
