Residents frustrated with local fire department's alert system

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Queensbury residents have had enough of an alarm system meant to alert its volunteer fire department. They’re now saying it’s time for a new communication system.

Around the residential area of Queensbury, you’ll hear birds and sprinklers that are disrupted daily by a siren.

“It’s hard on me because I have ringing in my ears.”

Residents say it’s worse.

“All the dogs bark, my two dogs get upset with it. It’s multiple times a day.”

“It goes off at noon. That’s automatic, but with fire sometimes you hear it, two, three o’clock in the afternoon. It could be at night.”

This long-term problem is prompting neighbors to push for a change to the cold war-era alarm piercing ears throughout the neighborhood.

“In modern times, I don’t think you need that much.”

Queensbury Volunteer Fire Department says they do.

“They’re insistent they need this kind of siren or some kind of sound system to give them the alert that their services are needed,” John Strough, the Queensbury Town Supervisor, said.

Strough says the town and the fire department are looking for a replacement.

“Is it going to make everyone happy? Probably not. Is it going to be better than what’s there? Probably so.”

The siren was down for a period of several years. Residents are hoping to go back to that time.

“If you’ve been doing it for that period of time, why can’t you do it forever?”

“I feel bad for my neighbors who have children because I went through it.”

“We’re working on getting a system that’s less jarring,” Strough said.

NEWS10 ABC was unable to contact the president of the fire department, but Strough said the town is looking at different siren options with different sounds. He hopes for a replacement by the end of the year.
