Rally against police brutality

A rally against police brutality took place today at Townsend Park in Albany. This comes after Albany Police body camera footage of an incident in March was made public.

“We’ve been dealing with police brutality for so long, for so long.” said Saundra Thompson, mother of Armando Sanchez. “They keep telling us that change is being made….No change is being made. Only change is gonna be made when these officers start going to jail.”

On March 16, Albany police responded to a noise complaint for a large house party on First Street. An address known to police, as they’ve responded many times for a variety of disturbances.

That night, Officer Seeber kicked the door in and Lee Childs was physically removed. Police used pepper spray and ordered everyone out of the building.

According to the police report, Mario Luis-Gorostiza exited the home, then encouraged others to fight the officers. He was taken into custody.

The report also stated that Armando Sanchez then exited the residence and was causinga disturbance.

Police body camera video shows Officer Luke Deer shoving Sanchez to the pavement, punching him in the head with a baton, then cuffing him.

Officer Deer’s blood can be seen dripping from his face on the body camera footage, and in the audio, he claims that he was punched in the face. It is not clear how he sustained the injury because it was not captured on camera.

Officer deer was suspended and is facing assault charges. Two other officers were also suspended without pay.

Armando Sanchez was at the rally.

“Everybody knows that as living in this society, you do have rights. And I just want everyone to know that stand next to your rights. Don’t let anyone take your rights away,” said Armando Sanchez.

News 10 reached out to the Albany Police for comment, they said the investigation is still on-going.
