LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — St. Ambrose School in Latham was temporarily placed in lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a man drove a van into parked cars and the school.
The incident took place just after 2 p.m. The van, described as a white work-type van, struck a parked delivery truck and a basketball hoop. The vehicle then left the scene was found a short distance away at the intersection of Old Loudon Road and Columbia Street Extension.
The driver, 37-year-old Stewart Kimball, of Latham, was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, and Failed to Keep Right.
There were some initial conflicting reports that Kimball tried to get into the building, but that was determined to be false.
The lockdown was lifted at 3:12 p.m., and students were dismissed.
There were no reported injuries or structural damage to the school. There was moderate damage to the delivery truck.
Police said Kimball was not intoxicated or under the influence but state he may have had a seizure. No other explanation was provided and no threat or grievance toward the property was discovered, according to police.
