Police investigating after tires stolen from car dealership

HALFMOON, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Police in Saratoga County are investigating a theft at a car dealership from over the weekend.

Managers of a local car dealership showed up Sunday morning to find a dozen cars with their tires taken off and sitting on rocks.

Car, after car, after car, at New Country Toyota in Halfmoon stripped of the tires and left hoisted up on rocks, or even sitting on the ground.

Captain Jeff Brown with the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department says this type of crime is nothing new.

“It’s a nationwide issue. Yeah, we’ve seen a few in the area of recent and this appears to be tied into a rash that’s been going on up in the Northeast coast.”

He says there’s reason to believe this theft was part of a much bigger operation

“A box truck was stolen from behind the dealership and it’s now been reconverted in Massachusetts out by the coast.”

He says the crimes happened in the overnight hours from Saturday into Sunday and he believes the thieves knew exactly what they were doing.

“I think they’re getting some practice so they may be good at what they do.”

Selling stolen tires and rims aftermarket can be a lucrative criminal enterprise.

Joe Gentile, with Albany Light Truck, says if you’re buying tires from an independent seller, you should be asking the right questions.

Luckily, Brown says they do have some leads.

“We’re looking at a lot of surveillance video that’s one of the main leads. We also collected some evidence there at the scene to be submitted for latent prints and DNA.”

If you have any information that can help police find out who did this you’re asked to call them right away.
