Police: Driver crashes after fleeing DWI checkpoint, leading police on chase

A driver led police on a lengthy chase Thursday night, according to New York State Police.

Police say 37-year-old Ryan Spiak of Averill Park fled from a DWI checkpoint in the City of Rensselaer at the on-ramp to the Dunn Memorial Bridge after a sheriff’s deputy noticed illegal contraband in the center console of the suspect’s vehicle. The driver allegedly hit a deputy while fleeing the scene, causing a minor injury.

The driver led police onto I-90 WB and into downtown Albany before eventually crashing into a Rensselaer Police vehicle near the Times Union Center.
