Personalized IDs help those with special needs

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — First responders will soon be trained to spot cards identifying those with special needs. The card is to streamline issues that may arise in communicating with those with developmental disabilities.

Distribution of the IDs began two months ago. The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities receives hundreds of applications a day.

In total, around 9,000 personalized IDs have been given out.

Lieutenant Ryan Macherone said the Schenecatady Police Department is in contact with someone with special needs daily and these cards will assist with those calls.

“It fills in some blanks that we may not have on the scene. It obviously stops a situation from escalating,” Macherone said.

IDs are distributed after an application is received. The link to that application is here.
