The New York City Ballet begins its summer shows at Saratoga Performing Arts Center Tuesday night. It’s bringing the magic of dance here to the Capital Region.
The dancers have been warming up the Capital Region for the past several weeks filming video in iconic locations all across the area.
Everyone is in position for the opening night of the ballet at SPAC.
“The lead up to this day is always so amazing,” SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol said.
SPAC President and CEO Elizabeth Sobol says the New York City Ballet always brings excitement to the area.
“It’s just a remarkable marvelous moment when the curtain goes up and the greatest ballet in the world is back at SPAC.”
This year is no different. To take it to another level, performers have been dancing their way across the Capital Region.
“The Empire State Plaza, several here in the park, one at SPAC, so we’ve tried to combine it all and make people really feel like New York City Ballet is at home.”
One historic and prominent spot they went to is the Adelphi Hotel.
“We are one of the gems of Saratoga being a hotel that was built in 1877,” Helen Watson, Adelphi Hotel General Manager, said.
Watson says a video was a great way to promote the hotel and partner with the ballet.
“It really kind of gets us out there. The visual, the coming in and doing the video really kind of showcases the hotel and allows people to see the hotel who have not been in here yet.”
Her favorite part of the video is the ballerinas bounding around the banister.
“It was one of the many things that we were able to preserve physically here in the hotel.”
There will be four ballets performed this season.
“Balanchine, the great master there’s two phenomenal programs of Balanchine. There’s also Romeo and Juliet, the timeless tale,” Sobol said.
Plus there are some more modern pieces.
“There’s a closing piece called Something to Dance About and it’s like 30 dancers in 30 minutes and 130 costume changes.”
Sobol says the promotional videos, as well as the performances to come, will make for magical summer moments at SPAC as the ballet kicks off.
“It really is kind of a mixture of great art and amazing nature and a deep sense of community.”
