A mother and son is facing prison time after they were caught embezzling a combined amount of more than $1 million from a state agency.

People who share office space say that the Weatherization Association is currently “restructuring”.

Its headquarters are located in Guilderland.

According to its website, the agency provides expertise and training in home performance and seasonal home weatherization.

The mother was the chief fiscal officer.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares says Randi Smith, 53, of Amsterdam, wrote checks to herself using the agencies bank account.

To cover it up, she would create fake invoices from legitimate vendors.

Between June 14th, 2011 and May of this year, she pocketed upwards of $800,000.

Her son Dakota Smith, 23, of Saratoga Springs, was questioned by his bank when they noticed unusual deposit activity to both his own construction business as well as his father’s, totaling more than $350,000.

Both mother and son pleaded guilty to felony grand larceny charges in an Albany County courtroom.

Randi is facing three to nine years in prison and must pay the company back entirely.

Dakota is facing two to six years and must also pay full restitution.

Their sentencing is scheduled for November 19th and 20th.
