Menands School closed Tuesday due to "significant" student and staff illness

MENANDS, N.Y. (NEWS10) - The Menands School will be closed on Tuesday, April 2 due to “a significant number of students and staff members being ill”, according to district Superintendent Maureen Long.

Long announced the closure in a letter posted online on Monday. Long did not elaborate on the potential cause or severity of the illness, other than to say those affected were primarily ill with a fever.

Long says the closure was staff made the decision to close the school after consideration and discussion with the school nurse and “other experts in the field.” The school will be cleaned and disinfected on Tuesday during the closure.

Grades 3-8 ELA testing scheduled to begin on Tuesday will be postponed until Wednesday, April 3 when school resumes.

Given the current wave of illness, it seems appropriate to remind you that it is expected you keep your children home if they are sick with a fever, diarrhea, vomiting or severe cold symptoms and further they should not return for a minimum of 24 hours. Medicating them and sending them to school sooner exposes other students to symptoms and can perpetuate illness. Read more about reasons you should keep your child home.

We understand this is an inconvenience, however, the health, safety and wellbeing of our students and staff must be our highest priority.

Maureen A. Long
