Man arrested for vandalism in Congress Park

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) - A man is in jail after police said he was caught by surveillance camera damaging one of the fountains in Congress Park.

Visitors travel from near and far just to enjoy what Saratoga Springs has to offer.

“I’m from Ballston Spa,” Dan Kunkle said. “I come to Saratoga just to walk around the park and enjoy the scenery.”

Kunkle said it was disappointing to come to the park and see a fountain, rich in history, damaged.

“Yeah, you get angry,” he said. “People come, they disrespect the park, and they disrespect themselves.”

Early Tuesday morning, Saratoga Springs police responded to a criminal mischief call. They said the Morrissey Fountain had been damaged again.

“I’ve sat in front of cameras a lot of times, and I always tell everybody, we love having people come here, we love having people enjoy our community, but leave it how you found it,” Saratoga Springs Lt. Robert Jillson said. “That didn’t happen here. So whoever this individual is, they dented our community.”

Thanks to surveillance footage, the man was identified as Michael Hansen. The 30-year-old was arrested for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.

Police said he knocked over the fountain, which caused damage. At this time, police are not sure when the fountain will be repaired, but it will since it’s part of the town’s history.
