Man accused of drugging drink at Saratoga bar

The Saratoga Police Department arrested a man they say drugged someone’s drink at Gaffney’s Restaurant on Sunday.

Police say a male patron observed Nicholas Lareau, 30, a stranger, put a foreign substance into his drink with an eye dropper. Lareau left after the patron confronted him. The patron notified security who then contacted police.

Police say the patron did not consume any of the drink.

“People do things that are not ok. And you know, unfortunately we have to always be aware of our surroundings and what we’re doing,” said security manager Brad Armstrong.

Officers located Lareau leaving a different establishment on Caroline Street. Police say they recovered a dropper, a bottle that later tested positive for MDMA, and several loose Xanax pills.

Lareau was charged with second-degree attempted assault/administering a drug and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

He was arraigned and was later released after posting bail.

“I always tell patrons if you feel uncomfortable just come to us and we’ll look into it,” Armstrong said. “Saratoga, it’s crazy everywhere. It’s jam packed with people. Finding this stuff is like finding a needle in a haystack,” he added.

Police say the bottle and its contents were sent to the New York State Police laboratory for further analysis.

Armstrong said he’s also thankful for the quick action of the Saratoga Police Department who quickly found and arrested Lareau before he got too far away.
